What is Dimensional Formula of Gravitational Potential?

Posted in Dimensional Formulae | Email This Post Email This Post |

The Gravitational Potential at a point in a gravitational field is defined as the amount of work done in bringing a body of unit mass from infinity to that point without acceleration. The gravitational potential at a point is always negative, it is maximum (= 0 ) at infinity.

Mathematically,

Gravitational Potential at a point (V) = Work done (W) / mass (M)

Dimensional Formula of Work= M1L2T-2
Dimensional formula of  Mass = M1L0T0

Putting these values in above equation we get,
The Dimensional formula of Gravitational Potential is M0L2T-2.
The SI unit of Gravitational Potential is J kg-1.
